To ensure the health care of the residents of this important populated area, there are 11 small government hospitals including 01 (one) government modern Sadar Hospital with 250 beds within one kilometer of this area. Besides, many hospitals and clinics have been set up under private initiative. There is a huge demand for skilled and experienced nurses (including Diploma Nurses and B.Sc. Nurses) in all these health institutions. It may be mentioned that although Bagerhat is an important district of the country, no government or private nursing college has been established here. Even in the neighboring districts of Pirojpur, Barguna, Gopalganj and Narail, no government or non-government nursing college has been established. There is only one government nursing institute in Bagerhat district where only diploma nurses are taught. It is not possible to provide better services to the patients due to lack of skilled nurses. Educated Meritorious Students and Diploma Degree Nurses are unable to pursue higher degrees in Nursing (Basic and Post Basic BSc) due to financial and positional reasons as there is no college despite their strong desire to provide services to patients admitted to private and government hospitals at the same time.

Like other countries in the world, Bangladesh has attached special importance to maternal and child health care and health care of the general public. Registered nurses of our country are engaged in the service of huge population of the country. They continue to play a significant role in the SDG implementation program, including reducing maternal and child mortality. Overall, the contribution of nurses in healthcare is paramount. The number of skilled registered nurses is less than the number of doctors in proportion to the population of the country.

It is to be noted that due to the establishment of new community clinics and hospitals by the present government to make the healthcare sector improved, prosperous and accessible to the general public, patients are being deprived of improved services due to lack of skilled nurses as per the demand. According to various surveys, there is a demand for more than 100,000 (one lakh) nurses in the country to meet the standards of the World Health Organization in the public-private sector. It may also be mentioned that there are golden opportunities for skilled nurses abroad as well as advanced job opportunities abroad and can play a leading role in earning foreign exchange.

Although nursing is considered to be a great profession, it has not been given much importance in the past to increase the number of skilled nurses including professional development. At present, it is time to create skilled registered nurses who are trained in line with professional knowledge, skills and modern medical technology. In order to implement the SDGs of the Government in line with the practical progress of the country, there is a need for proper and fully institutional approved training to bring an acceptable image in the nursing profession at home and abroad and to meet the demand for healthcare.

Overall, the shortage of health care sector in the region and the need to provide proper and safe medical care to the private sector in the municipal town under the Sadar police station in Bagerhat district in view of the need and great vows of the corona virus and other new patients with this in mind, we have taken the initiative to set up a “Nargis Memorial Nursing College”. Infrastructure has been built in its own place as per the policies and rules given by the government. The Nursing College is located at 01 (one) km from Bagerhat Sadar Hospital. With the approval of the proposed college in the area, the need for skilled nurses for the development of health services in the government can be met. This will meet the demand for skilled nurses from different districts of Khulna division and other parts of the country, as well as earn foreign exchange through employment abroad.

Therefore, the proposed “Nargis Memorial Nursing College” will make a special contribution to the students’ pursuit of higher degrees in Nursing (Basic and Post Basic B. Sc.) and Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Midwifery degrees and bring health care to the doorsteps of the people. In order to establish and maintain this college, we will be bound to abide by all the policies and rules given by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Under Bagerhat Sadar Police Station, we have 24 (twenty four) decimal of land owned by us on Mostajabul Haque Road of the municipality, where there is a 06 (six) storey and a 03 (three) storey building. With the approval of the government, the proposed “Nargis Memorial Nursing College” will be used for academic and administrative activities, student hostels, auditoriums, dining halls and kitchens.
